Intralingual Translation among Saudi Dialects: Bidialectal Code-switching from Bedouin Hijazi Dialect to Urban Hijazi dialect in Jeddah

Abstract

This paper aims to study the impact of the urban life of the modern city of Jeddah on the linguistic features of Bedouin Hijazi immigrants, specifically, female members of the Harbi tribe. A quantitative approach is followed to measure the frequency of participants' code-switching from the bedouin dialect to the urban dialect. The paper concludes that from the three morphological variables examined, the dropping of the verb nominative marker /-un/ is the most frequent. However, the overall percentage of the participants' dialectical code-switching is low. Thus, female of the bedouin Harbi tribe show no great tendency in adopting the urban dialect linguistic features
